Rocket League Review

“Does it go for the championship or does it commit an own goal”

Rocket League takes the tried and true game of soccer and decides to take it up a notch. How is this possible? Rocket League answers it by taking the fun of RC cars and strapping rocket boosters to them and drops them into the arena to play soccer, I’m in. But cold such a fun combination really make for a wonderful game well… read on.

Story
Unfortunately when you bring in sports, not even the fun of rocket powered RC cars can help. The story is pretty basic in regards to what goes on, you pick your team, you pick your difficulty and you pick how many games you play (max is 36). Then you’re off to the races playing game after game, after game. Unfortunately this is far as it goes in terms of story. I would of liked to see more but when you have rocket powered RC cars, it is amazing how much you can get for it.
I give the story 5 out of 10.

Could you have given us something more?

Game play
Rocket League takes a simply mechanic and finds way to make it somewhat annoying. Issues with the controls come up as a game gets into full swing with the way you move both your car and camera. As you move around the field, you can get lost as you sometimes frantically move the camera around just to try and find the ball. The biggest issue with the game play comes as you try to load a 4v4 match-up, within minutes of starting your game; the connection begins to show up and takes all the air out of your tires (no pun intended).
I give the game play a 6.5 out of 10.

I would like to have a 4v4 match not turn into a Johnny Depp movie, shaky and completely clueless.

Graphics
If you don’t care about the story or you tolerate the game play, then graphics will keep you interested. With the smooth textures on the cars and some impressive detail to the field Rocket League makes up for the above with a game that looks as impressive as it is chaotic. The more that you play, the more you noticed that great care was taken into this game to make it look as great as a AAA title.
I give the graphics a 8 out of 10.

A gorgeous game that rivals even the biggest AAA title.

Overall, I give Rocket League a 6.5 out of 10. It has the makings of a great game but needs to be fixed before.
